Understanding Click to Cancel: Navigating Churn Management in the Fitness Industry
November 12, 2024
What is Click to Cancel?
The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) “click to cancel” legislation in the fitness industry refers to regulations that aim to protect consumers by requiring clear and transparent cancellation processes for gym memberships or fitness services.
This legislation typically mandates that fitness facilities must provide consumers with the option to cancel their memberships easily and conveniently, often through a simple online “click to cancel” feature.
By implementing this legislation, fitness businesses are obligated to make cancellation procedures more accessible and user-friendly, ensuring that consumers can terminate their memberships without encountering difficulties or hidden fees.
The new rule is due to come into effect in around six months’ time. ClubReady’s branded member app, powered by myFitApp, is already fully compliant, and ClubReady currenly offers some online cancellation options within the system. We are currently working on a solution for ClubReady to ensure all studios and centers are adhering to the new legislation.
What Can You Do to Maintain Your Members?
To adapt and thrive in the changing landscape brought about by the new click to cancel legislation, gyms can implement the following strategies to maintain their members:
1. Enhance Customer Experience
Focus on providing exceptional customer service and ensuring members feel valued and appreciated. By prioritizing customer satisfaction, gyms can build loyalty and reduce the likelihood of cancellations.
2. Improve Communication
Keep members informed about their membership terms, renewal dates, and cancellation policies in a clear and transparent manner. Effective communication can help manage expectations and prevent misunderstandings that may lead to cancellations.
3. Offer Flexibility
Provide flexible membership options, such as month-to-month plans or the ability to pause memberships temporarily. Giving members control over their commitment can reduce the urge to cancel altogether.
4. Incentivize Retention
Consider offering loyalty programs, discounts, or additional benefits to incentivize members to stay. Rewarding long-term members can foster loyalty and increase retention rates.
5. Regularly Seek Feedback
Collect feedback from members to understand their needs, preferences, and concerns. Utilize this information to make improvements and address any pain points that could lead to cancellations.
